2d #1: unconventional self portrait

Research

When the exercise was given to us on the first day of class, I have to admit that I was a bit shaken by it. Most probably because I have not drawn or sketch anything realistic in a while. The assignment given was completely different than what I had expected.

EXPLORE MEDIUMS

Doing this exercise helped me to explore beyond my comfort zone of drawing using pencils into other types of mediums. This experience has helped me grow as a budding artist.

Mediums used

GRAPHITE PENCILS

CHINESE INK

BLACK CHALK

The whole action of drawing using black chalk was very bold as the material is malleable. You can do either thin lines or really thick ones just by changing the way you hold the chalk. After I was done drawing, I smudged it a little bit to give off a dark effect.

Meanwhile, using chinese ink to draw with a satay stick, an ice cream stick and a pair of chopsticks really thought me to let go and be more spontaneous when it comes to drawing. By splattering ink on the paper has already resulted in a beautiful design. Imagine what more you can do?

FINAL OUTCOME

A mixture of collage and sketches

After brushing up on our sketching skills by using different types of mediums, we were then introduced to the art movement that is Dadaism, aka collage materials from newspapers or magazines.
