2D #2: EXPRESSIVE PATTERNS

I did 45 patterns in total using graphite pencils as I was overflowing with ideas and inspiration. There were an equal amount of patterns for both man-made buildings and natural designs. This exercise has sparked an interest in me to do pattern design in the near future.

When the exercise was given to us, it felt awfully similar to the exercise that was given previously except this time around it is more repetitive and abstract based. We were told to get inspiration from man-made buildings or natural designs.

REPETITIVE OR NOT

Personally, I felt at peace doing this exercise as the repetitiveness brought a wave of calmness upon me. I managed to do all 45 patterns using graphite pencils because I found it difficult to stop once I had started. Although I did get inspired by Pinterest, I did drew a few patterns that were original.

Before finalising my final outcome, I redrew some of the designs in colour pencils to properly compare which ones that I truly liked most. They are in the last 2 slides above. If you look closely, you can see that I went with neutral colours. This is because I wanted to go with neutral colours to signify calmness.

FINAL OUTCOME

A mixture of artline pen and colour pencils

After brushing up on my pattern designs that I made earlier, I have decided to go with drawing repetitive buildings in Jerusalem. I had painted the ground grey and pasted white crepe paper on it to stimulate textures. I took about 4 hours to finish this piece but it was worth it.

This is one of my favourite pieces from my portfolio of assignments and exercises. I am thinking of either framing this in my room or selling it online. I remember how frustrated I was the moment I messed up the painting but I had quickly thought of a solution. In the end, I am very happy with this piece.
